In a remarkable move, popular eSports team TSM has officially revealed that they’ve signed four new pro Apex Legends players, all of which are women. You can support the new teammates on Twitter: @ItzJaney, @BearSabz, @avuhlie, and @heyGuhRL. They have all consistently proven themselves among the most skilled and entertaining players in the game.
Here’s the announcement from TSM, featuring a brief hype video with various Apex Legends highlights:
A more extensive introduction video includes key interviews with all of the new pros, including their interests in the competitive scene and other long-term goals:
It is immediately clear that this is a major win for TSM, since each of these women have already carved out massive success on their own, boasting countless fans thanks to their unique charisma and talent.
However, it is also a win for women in gaming, who continue to be underrepresented. It has always been strange to see Apex Legends missing so much of its fanbase in the pro scene. After all, the game itself remains one of the most inclusive titles in any genre.
Hopefully, TSM’s move will encourage other organizations to support more women in gaming, and inspire more fans to pursue eSports as a viable career.
Fortunately, the four new members added to TSM today have also been at the forefront of driving that kind of support. For example, last year, GuhRL successfully completed an attempt to become the first woman to solo queue to Master Rank in a single livestream, and also participated in Puma’s #SheMovesUs campaign.
It will be a thrill to see how far TSM’s new pro players can reach in comps. It’s both unfortunate and a little odd that Janey doesn’t seem especially interested in comps in today’s video, but at least she does mention that she might participate “in the next year or so”.
