Twitch’s branded content guidelines came under extreme fire today from nearly every streamer and content creation organization on the platform. It was so intense that Twitch issued a statement two hours after the ToS ad update email, saying it intends to “update the language” because of the uproar from the community.
In the thread, the company states that the released statement was too broad and this “created confusion and frustration.” Instead, it intends to change the language to make it more specific, but this has really left many streamers more confused than they were before. The rapid response from the streaming community has largely been negative.
There’s FaZe Kalie, who gave a pretty succinct response.
One user points out that a three percent overlay is a pretty specific requirement, and it is a number that seems like it would have had to be nailed down internally. Some users are insinuating that Twitch knew what guidelines it was posting and has posted this statement in response to big streamers like Mr. Beast deciding to come out against the changes.
In truth, it was likely due to the overwhelmingly negative response from all streamers on the platform, with Mr. Beast’s addition really driving home what the platform was working against. Regardless, it’s clear from the replies to the thread that no one is buying this response. We will likely need to wait for the updated guidelines, but these could take anywhere from a couple of days to months.
With streamers like Asmongold and the OTK organization threatening to leave Twitch if they get a better offer, it’s unclear what the consequences of this news are.
