There are rumors spreading of a possible remake of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. This is the first game in the series that features Nathan Drake as its protagonist. It sounds great, and while the source is pretty reliable, you should always take these things with a grain of sand.
The rumor originates from XboxEra podcast hosts Nick Baker and Jon Clarke, who claim to have seen evidence suggesting Sony considered a ground-up remake of the first Uncharted. However, both emphasize the information’s age, potentially dating back “a number of years.” This means that it could have been canceled along the way.
This throws the project’s current status into murky waters. While it aligns with Sony’s recent trend of remaking and remastering beloved titles like Demon’s Souls and The Last of Us Part 2, it’s unclear if the Drake’s Fortune remake ever progressed beyond initial talks. This also feels weird to hear because there was already a remaster of the first Uncharted games in the Nathan Drake Collection.
Yet, what brings this credence is The Last of Us Part 2. According to Eurogamer, Dataminer Speclizer discovered “hundreds of references” to the first Uncharted within The Last of Us Part 2 files, suggesting the concept wasn’t entirely abandoned. The studio may be preparing the engine to handle Uncharted next.
While an Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune remake would be huge news if it were true, we don’t know if it is. All we know is that there is a possibility. We’ll have to wait and see if Naughty Dog is looking to remaster the title in the future, but now is probably the best time to do it.
