Unity has chosen Matthew Bromberg as its new CEO. Bromberg has extensive gaming experience, having previously been the COO at Zynga, a major mobile game developer. He also held important positions at Electronic Arts and played a key role in expanding EA’s mobile gaming division.
As announced by Businesswire, Bromberg has been appointed to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of former CEO John Riccitiello. Riccitiello took responsibility for one of the worst decisions in Unity’s history. This policy was backtracked, but the company took a big hit from it, and the leadership had to be replaced.
The Board of Directors has shown confidence in Bromberg’s appointment, but it feels like a strange addition. Whitehurst has a ton of experience and may be the perfect choice. However, he’s from EA, a company well-known by gamers for its lootboxes, bad decisions for developers, and is often hated by gamers. It’s hard to have confidence in an executive from that company not to do what the former CEO did.
However, it seems like this new CEO might do a lot of good for Unity, especially in mobile. While at Zynga, he played a crucial part in the company’s revival and operational enhancements. He also oversaw the expansion of Electronic Arts’ mobile division and managed diverse teams across different locations, focusing on significant game categories.
Bromberg’s background suggests a potential focus on improving Unity’s position in the mobile gaming market. Unity is often used for mobile games, so he is a smart choice. I don’t think Unity will ever be a real leader in the industry like it was before; with Unreal being the top performer, it can go back to being the default for indie developers.
