Vincent Valentine is one of the most popular characters in Final Fantasy VII, but he is also one of the least developed. In the original game, he was an optional party member who didn’t join the group until late in the story depending on when you got him. His backstory was also shrouded in mystery, and he didn’t have much character development.
That’s all going to change in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. In a recent interview with FFDream, director Naoki Hamaguchi said that Vincent will be a more important character in the sequel. He’ll be more fleshed out, and we’ll learn more about his backstory and motivations.
To quote Producer Yoshinori Kitase:
… Regarding Vincent, at the time of FFVII , I chose his look and his name. So he’s an important character for me. You were able to discover him in the trailer for Rebirth , but what’s interesting is that now he can talk, and we will thus discover all his facets. I think you’re going to discover some very interesting things about him in FFVII Rebirth
One way that the developers are fleshing out Vincent is by giving him more facial expressions. In Final Fantasy VII, you couldn’t really convey emotions on the face. However, as per the interview, the developers really want to take advantage of this next part of the remake. Vincent will be someone who will get more screen time and be more well-known.
Overall, it’s clear that the developers are putting a lot of effort into developing Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This is good news for fans of the character, and it’s also a good sign for the game overall.
I was a fan of Vincent, to be honest, everyone was, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he does and says. Since Rebirth can tell its own story, I am sure that we’ll see a lot more character development besides Vincent, even though the developers named him personally.
