Atari, the publisher, in conjunction with developer, ARVORE, has announced the launch of the virtual reality game, Pixel Ripped 1978, slated for June 15. The title, which was a finalist at the 2023 Tribeca Immersive, will be available on PlayStation VR2, Quest 2, and SteamVR platforms.

Pixel Ripped 1978 transports players to an alternative universe set in the 1970s, at the brink of the video game revolution with Atari at the forefront. The game’s storyline revolves around Bug, an Atari game designer and programmer who possesses the unique capability to step inside the games she creates, fixing bugs and glitches from within.

When the game Bug is developing, named Pixel Ripped, falls victim to a cyberattack, the characters from classic Atari games mutate into intimidating enemies. In response, Bug teams up with her superhero creation, Dot, to fight off the digital threats from within the game itself and restore order to Pixel Ripped.

The game pays homage to the early days of gaming and offers players a multi-layered adventure. Players can anticipate encountering numerous Atari game references, moving between dimensions, meeting friendly characters, and discovering hidden Easter eggs throughout their journey. Pixel Ripped 1978 is not just a game, but a tribute to the genesis of an industry that has since become a multi-billion dollar entity.
