Above Snakes, an upcoming base-builder and survival RPG from developer Square Glade Games and publisher Crytivo, will officially launch on May 25th, 2023. It will be available on PC via Steam, where users can try out a separate prologue for free. According to a new tweet from Square Glade Games’ founder, “the first 2-3 hours of the game” will be playable:
Above Snakes showed off its gameplay mechanics, tone, and more in the full release date trailer, which you can review on the official Square Glade Games YouTube channel:
There are a couple of very interesting twists in Above Snakes. To begin with, players build the world themselves with pieces of isometric environment tiles. This should introduce a little more strategy to familiar genre mechanics like simple crafting and resource management. The opportunity to build totally different landscapes will lead to more replay value, too.
Above Snakes also doesn’t rely on the Wild West theme alone. In fact, it blends in supernatural horror, which has been all the rage in titles like Evil West, Hard West 2, and Weird West. The central conflict will involve “Lost Souls”, which appear to include zombies, skeletons, and other potential horror imagery.
The latter half of today’s trailer adds a surprising amount of blood for such a friendly art design. That may leave some fans disappointed in how much, or how little blood there actually is. But the world is vibrant, with a wide range of color schemes that help distinguish tiles. Not to mention, it is always refreshing to see rare cultural influences in the characters and story.
Above Snakes should offer just enough distinguishable features to convince fans of the genre to have a look. And that’s particularly true when the devs served up a free prologue.
