The upcoming remake of The Witcher, spearheaded by Rebel Wolves, a studio composed of CD Projekt Red veterans, promises to revisit and make the original better. Their focus is on rectifying elements that, in hindsight, haven’t aged as gracefully. This is important to making any game good, but there have been some notable losses.
The developers have acknowledged these shortcomings, pledging to address them in the remake. Lead quest designer Jakub Szamalek has been clear that he’s removing some things to make the game better. While the original title garnered widespread acclaim for its narrative, world-building, and characters, it also attracted criticism for certain clunky, outdated, or unnecessarily complex aspects.
“We want to honor the legacy of the original Witcher while also recognizing that certain areas could benefit from modernization. We’re carefully examining gameplay mechanics, quest design, and narrative pacing to ensure a smoother and more engaging experience for both returning players and newcomers.”
Jakub Szamalek (Edge Magazine)
Specific details regarding the targeted improvements remain scarce. However, Szamalek hinted at potential refinements in Edge Magainze. These include updates to combat mechanics, streamlining convoluted inventory management, and potentially reworking sections of the game’s opening hours, often cited as a hurdle for some players.
The rumor around The Witcher Subreddit is that the romance cards are going to be the first to go. We say good riddance.
Several characters in the original Witcher game have romance options, including major characters such as Triss and Shani and farmgirls who give quests. Whenever Geralt has sex with one of them, you get a lavishly illustrated pin-up of her, usually semi-nude and in a suggestive pose. It’s a bit crude and doesn’t help gameplay at all. It’s likely something that will not be in the remake.
We don’t know what will get removed for sure, but things that are dated or just don’t make sense with today’s gaming landscape will likely be removed. Final Fantasy VII is a great example of a game being remade to fit today’s player base and abilities while keeping the original nostalgia alive.
Well I think I will stick with original Witcher the romancing cards were to fun to collect and the statement they were not helpful in gameplay is not true as in late game you can not romance both elf and human faction ladies making it more motivating to replay the game .
