Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, an upcoming action RPG featuring sword battles and demons, just released the first official look at some gameplay in a new trailer today. The game is expected sometime in “early 2023”, with no final launch date yet.

Previously, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty had only been announced with a purely cinematic trailer back in June 2022. It explored the tone and mythology of the title, which explains that it’s set in an alternate history of China, where the famous Three Kingdoms era is filled with supernatural abilities and demonic enemies.

The Three Kingdoms have been featured heavily in a variety of movies, shows and other games. Some fans may recognize this from the classic hack-and-slash series Dynasty Warriors.

So, the art design in today’s gameplay trailer features similar weapons and settings, although the combat looks far more complex. It’s probably closer to something like Naraka: Bladepoint, which concentrates on fluid movement, blocking and strategy.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is being developed by Team Ninja, who are best known for their Nioh, Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series. The new footage seen today also hints at just how Soulsborne games influenced Wo Long, too.

The gameplay looks absolutely gorgeous, and the music is great, making Wo Long yet another title that should successfully incorporate Chinese martial arts and culture. Just two months ago, Tencent announced Code: To Jin Yong, and between the first Western release of Sword and Fairy or Naraka: Bladepoint, the genre is definitely looking up.
