After weeks of frustration and lost progress, Xbox players of Baldur’s Gate 3 may see their save game woes come to an end. On January 17th, Xbox Support announced a long-awaited fix for the bug that caused save files to be wiped clean after crashes. This is something that has been promised and expected for some time.
Players can either manually download the update through their console’s settings or wait for it to automatically roll out within the next week. Xbox support was very formal, saying, “An Xbox System Update will be rolling out from today to address the Save Game issue on Baldur’s Gate 3. You can manually update your console via the Settings or it will roll out to your console within the next week.” Larian’s Director of Publishing, Michael Douse, instead chose a much friendlier way of announcing this in his tweet.
The issue originally appeared shortly after Baldur’s Gate 3’s debut on Xbox Series X/S in December 2023. Reports of countless hours of progress vanishing prompted Larian to acknowledge the problem and work on a solution. While smaller updates provided temporary stability, a permanent fix required collaboration with Microsoft due to its nature as a firmware issue.
This update should alleviate a major concern for many Xbox players and hopefully encourage them to return to their adventures in Faerun without fear of losing progress. However, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen an update that referenced this fix, so it may not work. We’ll have to see what everyone says.
With the save game bug potentially under control, then we will likely see more people buying the game. I am one of those who decided against buying the game on Xbox when I heard about this bug. Some others may have chosen to just wait a little longer to see this fix before purchasing, but since it’s safe, I’d say go ahead and buy.
